Community Engagement

Our Take on Community Engagement

Family Circles is grounded in relationship. Community engagement is not a service—it is a responsibility.

This work is rooted in Native values, teachings, and Indigenous ways of being, where connection, respect, and shared responsibility guide how we work with individuals, families, and communities. Family Circles engages alongside communities to support healing, strengthen relationships, and build pathways forward that are culturally grounded and community-driven.

Our Approach to Engagement

Family Circles approaches community engagement as a relational and collaborative process—not a transactional one.

This means:

  • Listening before leading
  • Building trust over time
  • Honoring community knowledge and lived experience
  • Working in partnership—not in isolation
  • Aligning with cultural values, teachings, and protocols
  • Supporting community-led vision and direction

This approach ensures that all work is grounded in respect, relevance, and long-term impact.

Guided by Indigenous Ways of Being

Family Circles engagement is grounded in Indigenous ways of being, where:

  • Relationships come before outcomes
  • Respect guides interaction
  • Responsibility is shared
  • Community knowledge is valued
  • Healing is collective

This foundation shapes not only what we do—but how we do it.

Trauma-Informed & Culturally Grounded

Community engagement is carried out through a culturally grounded and trauma-informed approach that:

  • Recognizes the impacts of historical and lived trauma
  • Creates space for safety, respect, and trust
  • Supports healing through connection and shared experience
  • Avoids one-size-fits-all approaches
  • Centers dignity and community voice

Grounded in Experience

This work is informed by extensive experience in:

  • Tribal community engagement
  • Native education and program development
  • Behavioral health and recovery-focused programming
  • Prevention and wellness initiatives
  • Intergovernmental and community collaboration

Family Circles brings both lived experience and professional expertise to engagement work, ensuring it is authentic, respectful, and effective.
